Poems - At the Early Bell

At the Early Bell

In the still before the first first period
desks stand at attention on floors slippery
with summer polish. Pristine textbooks in neat
stacks of ten sit unsullied on the counter.
The supply cabinet still organized, full
of unopened reams of paper, unsharpened
pencils, rulers, protractors and compasses.

Before the first students come thundering in;
before desks become skewed, graffiti-covered,
before the first undone homework, failed exam,
blank look, before the attitude is copped,
first referral written, the first detention,
the first time I count to ten and continue
teaching, holding back profanity, or tears.

When dreams are still full of students measuring
angles, constructing segments, proving theorems.
Raging teens will evolve into productive
citizens because I showed them the value
of learning. Before that first day, that first class,
I can still believe things will be different
this year. Unlike last year, I will reach them all.

"Desks stand at attention..." and that's just one phrase I enjoy. This poem tells me you are so much more than Teacher. Students are blessed to have you.

took me back to the first day of school walking down the newly cleaned halls smelling of disinfectant that made your stomach nervous at the thought of a new school year beginning. great write.

I love the end of this becuase it really states the goal - it illustrates the dedication to your profeession! Nicely done!
