Even Now

Even now I can hear the sounds….
Rapid fire semi-automatic weapons
Piercing into the thigh of the black night
And the air howled
Echoing up and down the dark alleys
Connecting my neighborhood
Gaily revolver rounds ironically laugh
As the sun descends

For me the moon plays Mossberg songs
As cats overturn garbage pails into already littered streets
Now I can hear one of them faintly, breathing
Breathing so heavily his thoughts
Precede him
Quickly through the concrete fields
To his rabbit hole
...Run Rabbit Run…
And now the others, many voices that clash
Closer until the foxes tone in unison
…he’s not going to make it
The windows in my bedroom have frosted
From the silent chill only glimpsed by my eyes
That was years ago

Even now
I can hear the sounds
I can hear the voices
