November Thoughts

by Jayelle

Drear November unravels
the sweater of my hopes,
winding it into a ball of yarn,
which April discovers and re-knits
into a verdant blanket of dreams.

Thanks, Sandy! This one is a few years old. It kind of just "unravelled" itself one day. November is such a dreary month...no beautiful colorful foliage like September & October, no sparkly snow & ice glittering on the trees as in Dec. thru March, no bright new green of the spring, no flowers of the summer. It has to be the dreariest month of the year here in New England! Sad

Thank you! The whole image just came into my mind; I "felt" it that way...the gray month, all the hope seeping out of me, balanced by the hope of spring in the future. Joan

"Drear" is a bit of an obscure word...but I still enjoyed this whimsical little seasonal piece.

How so? Obscure in that it is an old poetic term not used often? Or obscure in that it doesn't describe November well enough? It translates into gray and melancholy which is how I perceive November. I'm glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for stopping by to read & reply. Smile Joan

Maybe I should have said "arachaic"..but it does describe winter aptly, and lends a bit of romanticism as well.

Oh my! I wouldn't want it that warm for sure! I guess it's not so much the cold as it is how gray it will be after the brilliant, vivid reds & yellows & oranges of the fall foliage. Thank you for stopping in to read, Lindsay, & good luck in keeping cool! Joan

Thanks, Zoe. We've had an unusually warm & bright November until yesterday & today...which are more the kind of day that inspired that poem a few years back. Yet, it's still too warm to be a "real" November. Global warming?

Yes, I agree. It doesn't seem like fall until the weather turns a bit crisper. We have been lucky in the rain department up until now. Very Happy I guess you need one or two rain days to mix it up.
