ALEXANDRIA

by Gnaughm

(with acknowledgement to Lawrence Durrell “Justine” 1957)

A thousand dust tormented streets
Five fleets behind the harbour bar.
Brokers sip their morning prayers
While trams shudder past on metal veins.

The sulking bodies of the young
Filter past the lemon essence -
Stand lightly here and drink the day in
With vivid ice and watermelon!

Behind the docks, the leaning houses -
Shattered arches, violet doors.
Blue handprints on red walls inside
Guard against the evil eye.

Flies invade the dun-floored cafes
Rats circle shuttered balconies.
Melissa weeps behind the shadows:
“This city’s full of wounded lovers”.

A drunken woman walks the night
Shedding lines of song like petals.
Sick men, prophets, whores and beggars
Watch with petrol lamps for strangers.

An exhausted camel lies on the scorched earth
And submits, puzzled, to the axe.
Bare feet tread the blood for days.

Truly vivid and intense... I believe I would become happily lost in the details of the novel. Thank you for writing of it in your poem.
Oh, my granddaughter's name is Alexandria, as well
Cheers, Mary Ann
