THE TIMES I WISH I SMOKED

Waiting, waiting for my ride
My ass taking on the patterns of this bench
which has surely held many waiters before me
Every set of approaching headlights
Evaluated as possible salvation
Disappointment re-sinking in
As each set of lights turn into rides
That aren’t mine

Each second takes on a minute’s time
I begin to wonder if I have been forgotten
Did I tell him the right time?
Did something happen, is he alright?
What time is it anyway?

Others join me in begrudged silence
Slouching against walls
Weighed down by book filled sacks

I focus in on the click of a lighter
and the crinkling of a burning cigarette tip
A deep breath in, a deep breath out
Their time lost in the indulgence of it all

I became jealous
Coveting what usually seemed poison
Envious of their activity
In a place where the rest of us sit
Silently
Twiddling thumbs
And waiting.

If only I could smoke a cigarette
Without the world spinning
If only a pack of smokes
Was my usual reward for a school day well done
Than maybe this time would slip on by
The minutes gone before ever realized

But no I sit upon this seat
Growing rigid from winter’s oncoming chill
My sandaled feet regretful of their choice
Waiting to see that familiar Pontiac
Pull up right in front of me

You've made me want a cigarette as well...lol You're descriptions are vivid and it's easy to put myself in the shoes of your character. I very much enjoyed reading your post.
