a match strike

by phishy

A Match Strike.

The perfect match is over
And done with;
The laughter has been drowned
By the sobbing
And that too has faded away.

The darkness each one is
Encased with,
Suffocating hopes and dreams
And crushing futures.
Complete blackness with
Screaming hearts and
Eternal loneliness.

The flash of illumination
In the abyss.
The bright orange speck
In the blackness.

Each one feels the shock,
They see the spark
And watch it as it burns.
Reaching out to the light,
Wanting to find the person
Who struck a match
In the abysmal darkness.

As an existentialist/atheist/anti-authoritarian, this speaks to me on a very profound level. These words show a realisation of how utterly insignificant we can feel as individuals trapped in the chaos of existence and, if I may extend a teleopic consideration, the way that people reach out for the hope, or light, of those they see greater than themselves. By this I mean celebrities, politicians, rulers and preachers, etc, that purport to have the answers to guide the lost flock to happiness.
The vocabulary you have chosen to use in this piece works really well, (though I admit to a tendency to focus on meaning rather than method which does not make me the best critic!), and I especially liked the way the second stanza comes together. great work, take care, spence

thanks spence, you really are helping! i so enjoy writing but sometimes it just doesn't feel right. this was one of those, i read it and hated it and then reread it and loved it but ja, i appreciate the critisism and really hope you're enjoying the reading. a lot of what i write is abstract love poetry but try and find, saldanha bay, sound of paradise and maybe even live alive and missing the worst. i think you may enjoy them more
