THE PROTEUS CURSE.

by dav.smith

How can you love me
No one could

not me

not as I am

Some one as hideous as myself can not be loved
specially by a beautiful woman like yourself

you tend to me so gently so honestly
you see into my soul

My ugliness you seem blind too
mirrors lay shattered upon floors so to hide who I am

Why does it have to be like this

why do you not detest who I am

I love you, but can not let you love me
for it would not be fair

heart cries to be with you out in the world
heart cries for who I am

I did not ask to be born this way
nor did I ask for years of taunting and hatred
no you can not love me
No no no I won't allow it

For I am a mutant beast
and for that can not be loved
for alone I will be,
for ever alone with this Proteus curse

(Proteus Syndrome is commonly known as Elephant Man Syndrome )

I say love knows no bounds
and loves all
your poem is a struggle for a lot of us today
sometimes i feel like this....
how could anyone ever love me
but i realize
Love is universal
i love this poem dav Wink

Libby, I am so glad that you can see the love in this piece, this poem tries to show the struggle of a mans love caught up in a distorted body. And how he struggles to understand how such a woman would or could love him. She has seen past his dis figuration and found his true soul. We all are guilty of just looking at peoples exterior presences and not at their true being. I use to do this myself. until I started working with MS patients. (when I was young and fit), Be well my dear friend. Hugs to you, dAVE

Melly we should all be blind to the visual defects born to us. Looking beyond and into the souls will show how every one is equal in beauty. Be well and hugs to you. dAVE

Great piece Dave. You are a very talented poet. Let me tell you why I say that my friend... the genuine emotions you were able to put into this poem were amazing... it was as if you were writing about your own experience, and not that of a character.

Be well my friend,

Ah DavE... I read your poem yesterday and simply didn't know what to say. This is especially poignant, a sincere and thoughtful beauty and the beast reincarnated in poetry of fine intuition and great depth of vision. Really well done my friend. Mary Ann

Mary Ann, your generous and kind comment over whelms me. I only wish for people to feel what it is I am trying to express. And make people aware of those less privileged than us. The focus of the world needs to be on those less fortunate. Not on who has the biggest gun. Hugs to you my sweet friend. dAVE

dave, this is one of the most beautiful personae pieces i have ever had the pleasure of reading. to place yourself so fully in someone else's skin is truly amazing. you captured the extremes so well, the love and the hate, the happiness and the pain, its all there in some way, shape, or form. greatness, my friend, this is greatness...
