The Bad Boy

by spokerman

Once there was little boy
who was so very bad,
he took a lot of joy
in making his parents sad.

Things of theirs he would break
when he didn't get his way,
he make all the trouble he could make,
each and every day.

No matter how hard his parents tried
to each him love and care,
in the end they always cried
for kindness he would not share.

Then one night in his room
a spirit did appear
told him of his doom
and the boy trembled in fear.

He was shown the fires of hell
where he'd go if he wasn't good
and listened to his parents well
and do the things he should.

The boy did not want this fate
so vowed to change his ways
thank goodness it was not too late
to be good the rest of his days.

His parents he did obey
did as they asked him too
now they all laugh and play
the way good people do.

Wow, I am disturbed by the message of this poem and disturbed even more that it is listed under the youth and children's poetry section. I would never read this poem to my children.

Not only does it convey that being bad means you will go to hell, but it also implies that human kind is so simplistic and morally bereft that the only way for them to be kind to one another is by threatening them with burning in hell rather than appealing to ones sense of humanity.

If this was listed in the regular poem section I could see it as being a bit of a sardonic message; making fun of the simplicity of nursery rhymthes and pointing out the horror in the way that we try to get our children to obey through the veiled (and not so veiled) threats that nursery rhythmes often contain.

If this was your intent than bravo, but I fear that you are serious about creating and new nursery rhythme to tell to tell to children and that scares me. If that is so than perhaps it would be best suited under the heading of "religious" poetry.
