On Romeo's Name, Always Mentioned First

by jadesays

IX.
You say you'll meet me by the roses
In the park that's near your house.
I wait.
You don't show. But I've known,
Have practiced "wherefore" all morning,
Readying my round-mouth surprised face for your absence.

VIII.
In the end, there is always morning,
The small comfort of a sunrise somewhere.

VII.
If we sit stiff and watch the darkness change
Through the windshield,
I won't have to look at your face.
I won't have to look at your stupid mouth, your
Crooked smile because you don't love me.
Because you don't take me seriously.

VI.
In photographs, you hide your face.
So now, I have only pictures of your hands.
No evidence of us together,
No proof that you exist.

V.
Your fingers stipple my skin,
Trace a portrait on my stomach,
Near my ribcage.
I suck in my breath so tight.

I do not exhale.

IV.
On the bus to Boston we agreed:
We never would have needed that stupid war
If either side knew how to say goodbye
Properly.

III.
You threw rocks at my window,
Ruined the screen.
The bugs made nests and hideouts
In my winter coat.
I told you you were lucky it was springtime.

The whole thing was a nice gesture
(I suppose),
But you wasted both our time and I wrote
"what a jerk" in marker over the duct-tape patch
Shaped like the sky.

II.
There are so many reasons for exile:
To cast someone out,
To hide them away.
You say you wouldn't mind Siberia so much.
I tell you you would never make it,
I say you are a narcissist.
You smile. I ask what for.
You say, "probably treason."

I.
If you shut up once in a while,
You might hear the birds on the balcony,
Making love-making music.
You might learn something about forever,
About words.

what a wonderful poem! I like the countdown, it adds a great building tension. IX and VI are superb!
