I Knew It Would

by jeffbell

I opened the cage door,
but the young bird was afraid,
the comfort within the bars,
was not so easy to renounce.
I left the door open, and stepped back,
slowly but surely the bird edged forward,
it wasn't long before it climbed out,
holding the bars between its beak,
almost too frightened to let go,
until finally finding itself sitting
upon the top of the cage.
I knew it would,
as curiosity always kills fear,
and thank God it always will.

The young bird now flies around my room,
landing in places familiar,
places it's made its own.
I'm happy to see the spread of its wings,
such beautiful exotic colours to my eyes,
and I would happily let it go,
I know it needs more space,
but it's too far from home,
the cold outside would surely kill.

Truth is, my own cage
we now both share,
bores me too.
It's dawned on me
it's time for me to be brave also,
and get ready to make my move.
But it's never easy to sell a cage,
when the pet shop owner is a fool.

Not at all what I expected from the title...
The first verse is liberating.
