dime store perfume

by graphitegirl

the scent lingers hard
and rises up after midnight

has an honorable name
like twilight or moon pearl

hard to pinpoint
its origination in a crowded room

eau de toilette
of shady roses, gutter jasmine… road kill

leaves a bad taste
in your mouth

complete with atomizer
for just the right spritz

reminds me of
mom

Ah, more than just a spritz of aroma in this piece. I sense the tinkle of glasses, a dash of humor, apple pie and mom. Americana a-la Bartell's, Michelle - love it! Cheers, Mary Ann

Reminds me of Easter many years ago when I saved my pennies and bought mom perfume from the five and dime. Thanks for the memories.

i wish women wouldn't wear 99 pence perfume. they always smell like an explosion in a chemical factory ha ha - paul and the fragrant hound.

lovely poem! reminded me when I was a young girl and bought my perfume at the dime store. I thought it was a wonderful scent until one day my boyfriend told me I smelled like danish pastry. lol! not a bad scent but not what I was going for!

I see the scent as a metaphor, given the last line (which sums up this poem perfectly). You took a complex issue and stripped it bare. Powerful writing.

My mother's perfumes came from Paris and Morocco, but I would go with my girlfriends to the dime store to sample all those magical promises of romance and escape that the perfumes promised. This poem was amazing. I especially loved "road kill"and "complete with atomizer/for just the right spritz". You are truly one of the best writers that I have read here.
