Poems - Under southern skies

Under southern skies

by Ozymandias

Under southern skies
a man is walking
along a bush track.
Sunlight bathes him
or blinds him, as time will tell
when he writes his life later.
For now, he threads
a poem through the silence of the bush,
always the scent
of the eucalyptus
heady under the sun
and the blue haze of heaven
brokering a deal
with his mind’s eye.

This land is harsh:
edges are sharp;
surfaces are rough;
distances are unkind
to the stranger.
Colours do not blind or dazzle
but rather lull the mind
with dullness and a kind
of stupefaction.

This land is too old
to move quickly.
It is slow and silent
and knows how to wait
for the onset of forever.

Forever is the tread
of bare foot on bush track
when it is felt through the skin
and the muscles ache
with the rhythm of the land.
Forever is to answer
the call of the kookaburra
as it mocks the disingenuous
search for destination.

Under southern skies
the man calls to his past,
summons up ghosts
from their old haunting
into new occupations:
breaking through this air,
he will tell his own story as he goes –

they say you’re mad
if you talk to yourself,
but the drum beats in the bush
and the man must answer.

G'day Rory...
Oh dear Rory, this brings back a time I spent on a station near Mootwingi. You've described not only the landscape but some individuals I met...especially the 'talking to yourself' type.
Catch you soon Rory.

Mootwingi? Must look it up! I'm glad this had some personal resonance for you, my friend.
