Stranger in the Mirror

Stranger in the Mirror

Who is this stranger in the mirror?
Surely, he can’t be me!
Yet, the only reflection
Is his that I always see.

Why won’t the stranger in the mirror
Leave and let me be free?
Why is he rooted there
Like a tall oak tree?

The stranger in the mirror
Looks nothing like I feel;
Surely, I must be dreaming
For this can’t ever be real.

I try to see myself
As what I actually know,
But I guess the stranger in the mirror
Is all that will ever show.

About this poem

This poem was composed to reflect how it feels to be born in a body that is different than how I feel and what it's like looking in the mirror not seeing the me I know I am.

Kayden Renee Phoenix

I was born a Transgender Female which is a female in a male body. I have struggled through having no support from my parents, religious persecution, and a society that refuses to accept anything else that doesn't match what they were taught or what they believe. I've been composing poetry since the age of 15 desperately trying to get others to understand who I truly am and how the world could be so much better if everyone loved completely unconditionally. more…
