Roses on a day

Eva Kiptoo 2000 (Elgeyo Marakwet)

Hey
I know today's almost over
But then today was a struggle
Today the sun was certainly hot
There were no trees to shade
Tracking a few kilometers home
Five days a week
Just to get the project done
So today i walked home
Under the hot sun
Waiting for a sign
A sign to shade or a truck

Today was hard
But then I had to fight
There was no water to drink
Office to office
Knock after knock
Not being certain which not to knock
Today was a challenge
Its still 12 pm
Not even a single ;we'll call you response
So yeah, today i walked

My phone calculated my steps
It was more than ten thousand
My feet were aching
It felt sore with each step i took
As if the day was easy
My heel broke with no money to fix
We were once a shoe-in to opportunities
But now more than ever there was none
With each sweat I wiped
The greater my hope dried
With each office I step the less I was guaranteed
But then my heel broke and there my heart sank

Today I walked home
With no good news
Thinking if ever will be one
But at that point my determination slipped
And there I wished I had one glass slipper
You know  how the story ends
But then, with time the story fades
And  then only a worn out shoe is what we hold
Today was hard
But there were no cards I held
With each office only a higher position was open
Which limited my fighting chances
So yeah, today was hard

I don't know which cards I held
But today I had no winning cards
Or you would say today there were no queens
There were only pawns
So yeah, today was hard
As if not hard the rain poured heavily
And the job search ended
With a heel broken
And no umbrella to shade my head
And remember I walked
So, I was late today
And today there were no jackpots
So, I lay my head after the heavy rain
Rating days and today was hard
No day was like this one

About this poem

It is about the struggle one undergoes in search for employment in a big city. It also shows how employers give you hope where there's none and the job seeker reaches a breaking point and laments about one of the job seeking days.
