The Empty Room

A mother's face - a windy face
hazy and blurred by absence.
Someone must have known her but no one does.
An empty room - remember, remember...
the sun on your back and the voice
"the angles have taken away your mother".
Her image has gone with them too.
All that remains is a smile.
A smile that appears in the night
and frightens me in my room.
I'm not ready to go yet
not ready for smiles.
I'll be a sober little girl
as distant as your picture
and so lonely.
An empty room with a secret smile
overlooking the sea
and abandoned.
