The Mountaineer

Standing at the summit,
gazing out o'er the land,
stands tall a rugged mountaineer;
a flintlock in his hand
Wearing boots of buckskin,
raccoon cap, clothes leathered
A grizzly bearded-face has he;
wrinkled, lined, and weathered
The blackened, cloudy overcast
reminds him that he's lonely
For passed-away not long ago,
his woman -- one and only
Rain begins to fall again
and finds him sick inside -- sheer
despondent emptiness, devastation;
damaged pride
Mourns his loss -- grieving in-silence --
such deep feelings he cannot hide
Yet some small comfort comes from knowing
that her spirit yet remains at his side
