Youth tends to see things very much in black and white but as I grow older, I see it not so much as 'shades of grey' but more as a kind of chaotic Carnival of bright conflicting colours.

| galley_poet's recent Blog entry. | the p-noise ( 6225 reads) | Saturday, June 14, 2008 (18:34:01) | | | Lately, I've grown disillusioned with the state of my poetry. I've just spent the past few hours looking at my poems, and by large, I really don't think I've developed any sort of unique voice. I've been writing poetry (intermittently) for close to twenty years now, and I really don't think I'm that good at it. I can count on one hand the amount of times I've been approached with compliments after reading (the last of which, occured in Boston, in April after I did an open mic reading at the Boston Public Library's main branch at Copley Square).
Just when I begin thinking that my work doesn't connect with anyone, I get the occasional comment that leads me to believe otherwise.
But, what do I really want out of poetry? Fame? Fortune? No, not really. I just write it because I get excited whenever I come up with the occasional good piece.
Seriously though, poetry, in my experience doesn't really seem to matter much in modern (American) society. There are a few celebrated poets, but by and large, most of us wallow in our obscurity. Selling our chapbooks for a couple of bucks at readings, earning a few bucks for a piece published in one of the larger publications. So far, I haven't made a dime off my poetry and I'm ok with that, and honestly, I don't think I'll ever make any money off it. There are far more poets out there than there is an audience for poetry. Having said that, where is the audience for poetry? I've gone to several readings, and for the most part, they seem to consist of poets reading to other poets with the occasional supportive friend/family member. So, why do we, poets bother with it?
If someone gives one of my poems a low (or high) rating my life continues as it did before I found out about the rating. What matters most to me, is knowing that someone read my work and had a reaction to it, maybe they enjoyed it, perhaps they thought it was the shittiest poem they've ever read. Regardless, my work had an impact (however negligible) on them, and to me, that's the highest achievement I can hope for. | Last 10 News Submissions: |
