Analysis of Hope

Charles Edward York 1966 (Saigon, Vietnam)

Hope is an orphan who walks alone
Without friends in miserable
Conditions, situations
And places
Searching for
Understanding
Acceptance
And recognizing the truth:
Everything changes
Bad karma flowers
As a weed that eventually dies
Hope arises inevitably on two feet
When the possibility of life
Persists and endures.

Adversity weighs as heavy as humidity
On days when trouble visits
Doubt questions everything
And the hot summer
Beats down where hope arrives
Taking away
The tears from tragedy
As it relieves
Tyranny of command
Giving the heartbroken
A way forward
For without hope
All is lost
And makes loners of us all.

About this poem

On an oppressive hot day I wrote this as a response to adversity. To persist and endure is what hope is. Without hope all is lost.
