Analysis of Our mistakes

Charles Fields II 1955 (Fort Bragg, NC)

After the blame game
has run its course,

from its most
naturally consistent point of view

conveniently catching us
defending our most optimistic,

at best mutually
indefensible positions
with the best of intention

however, skewed
short on initiative

to get beyond reasoning
as derelict as the uncertainty

of us as a pair, resigns us
to rushing heroically

Largely unprepared,
into the realm of
the unknown

Trying to cover
blind spots between us

Lacking a substantial base.

A tried, tested, and true
coping strategy,

when necessary
wisely, giving ground,

retreating into familiar territory,
to regroup… when panic sets in,

knowing when not
vested enough in each other.
To hold our ground

Now, as we are recuperating.
Deciding whether
we should take another chance.

Venturing forth once more,

At risk of losing heart
rooted in our failure

By not trying again,
to get it right

Rather than fold our hands,
give up on the idea of us…

and chalk it up
as just another round
Of experience

on our way
to that dream

As a soulmate coming
Into being
