Analysis of Idol Food
Richard Newton Sherrer 1951 (Easton)
Not all possess His wisdom,
And not His knowledge either;
But weak defiled freedom,
That we drift away further.
Eat food meant for an idol,
A conscience as defiled;
It’s like robbing the cradle,
Given a little child.
Food will never commend us,
No worse if we do not eat;
No better to do as thus,
Eating of a false god’s meat.
Take care that is right as yours,
Not being a stumbling block;
Go about your daily chores,
And be careful where you walk.
Discourage eating that food,
For if their conscience is weak;
It might cause them to be rude,
Unto the true God, we seek.
For the knowledge we cherish,
That the brother that Christ died;
A weak person could perish,
No faith in the crucified.
You sin against your brother,
Wounding them when they are weak;
Don’t sin against another,
Show compassion when you speak.
If food makes someone stumble,
I will never eat that meat;
I would rather be humble,
Than sit at an idol's feet.
