Joe Strickland 1986 (Hobbysville, SC)

back bent
like burdened beast,
laboring against the weight

sweat, struggle,
muscle and spirit strained
in the brutal dance of earning.

when the day is done,
the spirit undaunted,
strengthens,
a fire kindled in the forge
of strife.
