Analysis of Birdsong

Rob Bowman 1971 (Fresno, Ca)

Ode

rain in the morning;
why do birds chance their song?
through plight till morrow
fret be with them all the night long.

evening approaches;
how do they make their choices?
the worm mocks their return to a branch
risking new morning voices.

darkness flourishes;
when could they sleep?
as the cat bides in shifts with the owl
harking for a peep.

another wet morning;
what have they to gain?
enduring the uncertainty to balance song
with devotion to remain.
