WILBUR
JP. 1948 (United Kingdom)
WILBUR
The most dangerous beast that a farmer can keep
Is not a fierce lion but an intelligent sheep?
It does weird things that your mind will confound
And strange will occur when it is around
One such sheep was Wilbur a two- year old ram
It had been on the farm since it was a lamb
Where Wilbur set foot the flock would quick follow
To climb any mountain, explore a mud wallow
And much to the farmer's dismay and concern
What young Wilbur taught the flock seemed to learn
Like the day Wilbur thought that the green on the trees
Was grass kept for birds and not simply leaves?
It took him all day but the yew tree he scaled
But could not get down for his wool was impaled
Still he was not alone as the sheepdog found out
Who saw the field empty and thought they had got out?
Until he heard bleating from the top of that tree
And caught sight of Wilbur on a leaf chewing spree
He sat there just barking at the sheep he could see
Not only just Wilbur but the other forty-three
The sight was too much and he had to lie down
Not surprised at events with Wilbur around
What bothered the farmer is that Wilbur might breed
And tree-climbing sheep would come out in the seed
Still he strapped on the raddle at covering time
Thinking there might be a call for sheep like mine
But Wilbur just stood there and stared at the sky
Wondering what it might be like if these sheep could fly
