The Corrosion of My Soul

Scott Felgner 1979 (Ridgewood, New Jersey)

I was born a hopeful young man
I was able to stand strong
Believing in my mind
How did I become alone and scared?

I’ve heard lies about me
I’ve heard others talk from others talking
I’ve been denied by those that I thought accepted
I’ve reached out to find nobody there
I’ve heard silence when I’ve screamed for help

I’m so afraid to be alone
But I trust no one to walk by my side
I want to scream for help
But I know no one will be there

I want to say goodbye
But I want to see tomorrow
I will see tomorrow
But I don’t want to be there alone

I reject those who will reach out
They will hold it over me
If nothing more than personal gain
To make themselves feel important

I am me, not a Karma improvement
I am me, not a chapter in your book
I hide my darkness
Even though it’s painfully obvious

Do not greet me with a smile
If you plan to point and walk away
Do not greet me with a handshake
If you plan to only offer me a finger

I am a soul
I am a mind
I am not an afterthought
I mean you no harm
