Sitting To Admit
Lawrence S. Pertillar 1947 (Connecticut)
There are times I have to sit and admit,
A doing to question my patriotism.
And the pride I try,
To keep my ethnic heritage...
Of being an African American.
So proud I can be.
I have found myself,
Walking tall and arrogantly...
In a crowd of different and mixed races.
One minute and then the next,
Feeling overwhelmed by this.
In seconds to find my eyes in tears.
Yes.
And...
For no apparent reason,
I could observe to see...
Folks around me,
Acting as ignorant as if being paid...
To display a stupidity.
No where on Earth,
Should be allowed freely done.
Without being harnessed and strapped.
To at least a leash.
Or something that prevents,
Anyone else from believing...
What is happening to occur,
Is not an activity...
Of public entertainment to accept.
As a quality of life.
Getting more to expect.
To then ignore heard to hear,
Outrageous and absurd explanations.
About how the times have changed.
'Sir?'
'Yes?'
'Are your tears to cry of joy?
Or is there something else on your mind,
You would like to discuss.'
'No!
I will be okay.
Sometimes I feel filled,
With unexplainable happiness.
And there are others times,
I find myself reminiscing when...
Times like these were not,
So abundantly available...
With such a variety,
Of unsolicited or wanted madness.'
'Trust me.
I can understand that.
When my family and I moved here.
A few years ago.
You would not believe,
The money we have saved...
To be entertained like this to get it.
Without a dime to pay.
So...
I do understand your tears.
When I first arrived,
I felt the same way.
Until I realized,
God works in mysterious ways...
To bless us all!'
'I guess you do have a point to make.
And, I will go to think,
About your comments.'
'Do.
I did.
And guess what?'
'What?'
'Never have I felt better to know,
How blessed I am...
Not to worry about unnecessary expenses.
That God blesses me to get for free!
The experience alone,
Is too costly of a price to pay!'
'Wow!
Thank you.
I never thought of it that way!'
'Do.
I did!
And guess what?'
'What?'
'The only time I cry now?
Is when I am alone.
Thanking God to be blessed,
To be conscious and aware of it!
