Growing Older Thing
Lawrence S. Pertillar 1947 (Connecticut)
Listen.
Pay attention and learn something.
'I'm all ears.'
Remember,
You mention that.
This has nothing to do,
With your physical appearance.
Get away from that petty stuff.
That's all it is.
Petty.
Anyway.
If nothing else.
There is one thing I have come to discover,
About this growing older to age thing.
That it is never too late,
To make excuses for myself.
With that to choose to say,
I had a difference of opinion made.
And also a right to decide,
If I am a fool or not.
That choice is mine to have earned.
'You by now at your age,
Should be knowledgeable and wise.
Sharing your wisdom,
With younger people like me.'
I know.
SURPRISE!
Have you ever been my age before?
'Of course not.
What kind of question is that to ask?'
I've never been this age before either.
Talking about expectations?
What a disappointment!
However...
Such a joy and pleasure I get,
From doing and saying what I want.
And guess who could care less?
If I am a fool or not to call me crazy.
Take a guess.
'I don't know?
No good am I at these 'pop' quizzes.'
I understand.
And neither am I a biologist.
'What sense does that make?'
None.
Are you listening?
'I'm doing the best I can!'
Well anyway,
Before being rudely interrupted.
It will always be young people like you.
Who believe to know all there is,
About life.
To have not lived long enough to call,
Anyone an idiot, ignorant...
Stupid or a fool.
That's what I do.
To please expectations.
'I don't get it.
What sense does that make?'
None at all.
But you know what?
'What?'
You will ignore anything I say.
To believe me to be stupid.
Then later in your life to hear,
That's if you live as long as I have.
Young folks saying to you,
Nothing you say to them...
Makes any sense.
'At what age will that be?'
There you go.
Trying your best to get me to lie.
I'm going to say this to you right now,
Staying petty is not a benefit.
'That makes no sense.'
It's not suppose to make sense.
You're still too young,
To care if it does or not.
And take my advice.
'What advice?'
Don't give it.
You time doing it will go ignored!
