Selling Impressions
Lawrence S. Pertillar 1947 (Connecticut)
Pretensions to address them.
And impressions made to charade.
Has of yet fed the hungry.
Or sheltered those homeless.
In a country claiming greatness.
To leave many wishing,
For a taste of chicken soup.
Done to find them caring less,
About who deceives successfully.
With a choosing to do this and have it,
Believed...
Be they of whatever ethnic diversity.
That they have long been champions,
Of those that are poor.
What is needed more,
Are winners of those battles.
And not champions of those poor.
Who seem to stay that way,
By the ones who patronize their lives...
As a benefit that attracts to themselves,
Attention and federal grants.
To ensure their status remains unchanged!
'What are you saying?'
What am I saying?
'Yes.'
Ebonics or in Hoodspeak?
I don't do Pig Latin.
'Huh?'
Nor do I sweeten up,
What has been salted with pepper.
Especially around those,
Attempting to distance themselves...
From the obvious performance,
Of an ongoing masquerade.
However...
Congratulations.
The job you do is commendable!
'I happen to understand,
Exactly where you are coming from.'
That's great.
And I happen to understand,
Where you have never been.
Although...
The telling of those stories told,
Has maintained you status...
Of being a champion of those,
Not allowed.
Or...
Should I say,
Incapable to speak for themselves.
Excuse me...
Would anyone like more champagne?
