Never Is It Too Late
Lawrence S. Pertillar 1947 (Connecticut)
Never is it too late.
To awaken with eyes wide open.
And shakened by the dawning,
Of a consciousness allowed to sleep.
Through a persistent nagging,
One stays to lay dormant.
Refusing to hear,
The oncoming truth.
Appearing on the horizon.
Making clear what is produced.
No!
It isn't too late.
To accept and introduce yourself,
With excited commitment.
To a change that promises,
Not only opportunities but also benefits.
If one stays brave enough to admit,
Remaining in denial to delude and fiction.
Done kept to protect and defend,
Has left them in fear,
And feeling threatened...
By others less conscious.
Hoping their collection of weapons,
Will prevent what isn't there...
Coming to remove their peace of mind.
Nowhere near them to find.
Yet blinded by a darkness.
They have been made convinced,
Surrounds them all the time.
'Honey?
Why are all the lights on in the house?
We already have alarms,
On every window.
And each door is padlocked.
What has made you this afraid?'
'Me?
I'm not afraid.
I just want us to feel secure and safe.'
'Then why hire armed security guards?'
'That's just to let our neighbors know,
When we sleep...
We do it peacefully.'
'And...
When was the last time,
That was done inside of our home?
Was that before or after,
You bought wide screen TV's?
In every room so you can see,
Updated news to depict and describe...
Who the enemies are.
Threatening our lives,
From foreign shores.'
'Will you stop exaggerating.
How many times have we been told,
It's the growing diversity...
Of our democracy that's doing it.'
'Oh?
And who was it years ago,
Insisting we needed to move...
Into a mixed neighborhood.
To prove we weren't bigots or racists!'
'That was before Critical Race Theory,
Became the fad it has become!'
'And I am often asked,
Why my dreams once to have...
Are impossible!'
'Huh?'
'Drink your coffee.
I'm going back to bed.'
'Why?'
'To sleep.
I was hoping to tell you I had a headache.'
'What sense does that make?'
'None now!'
