Colored Zipcodes
Lawrence S. Pertillar 1947 (Connecticut)
We live at the dictates,
Of images to make them.
Especially in a society,
In which every inhabitant...
Becomes more identified,
By things they have acquired to possess.
Whether not declared ownership.
The priority is,
To make that impression.
And what matters more,
To explore it most?
From coast to coast.
Is the color of one's skin.
Scrutinized to label them.
With this having nothing to do,
To accuse them of being,
Either brilliant people.
Or useless incapable,
Empty headed fools!
And that process to accept,
Has left many believing...
Who amongst themselves,
Reflects the image of success.
From the outside and not in.
One's ethnicity to evaluate?
Is more important to tolerate.
Than the existence of truth,
And its reality reduced to delude.
Since it is not the human beings we are,
To appreciate and support...
What we do to contribute to society.
It is our zipcodes.
'Zipcodes?'
Yes.
As ridiculous it is to hear it heard.
'Zipcodes?'
Wake up Sunshine bather.
People living in certain zipcodes,
Have already been predicted...
What next they will do.
By who their neighbors are.
Where they live and if they drive a car.
And where they work if they do at all.
Regardless what impressions they make.
Religious beliefs or political affiliations.
With all of that being assessed.
Before and not after giving them respect.
'Huh?'
This current focus on redistricting?
Is, to me, so obviously ridiculous.
And blatantly mindless and foolish.
'Redistricting?
What do you mean?'
'There are many behind the scenes,
Knowing which demographics...
Can be easily persuaded,
To buy anything sold and told to them.
Marketing is a selling strategy.'
'You are confusing me.'
'And I'm not a used car salesman!'
'WHAT?'
'Instead of going through,
The nonsense of redistricting?
They should colorize the zip codes.
That process is far less noticeable.
And besides...
Few would be upset.
Probably no one would protest.'
'Protest?
Protest what?'
'Who has been selected,
To have their votes rejected!'
'I thought you were talking about,
One's ethnicity.
Division and racism!'
'Who me?
What gave you that idea?'
'Then...
What are you talking about?'
'Patriotism.
Pride.
And my undying love for America!'
'Uh...
Well,
Why didn't you say that?'
'When?
Are you listening to me?
I just did.'
