Sleep
Lawrence S. Pertillar 1947 (Connecticut)
No one can lose.
What isn't theirs to miss.
Yet told to hear,
A getting with a need for more of it...
Has valuable benefits.
Noticed to come,
When sleep to get...
Puts less stress on the mind.
Done to find,
Everytime one leaves behind...
Curiosity.
And a nagging unrelenting temptation to be,
Nosey.
With this to have it known,
By someone who has to tell who they saw...
Leaving Happy Hour at a neighborhood bar.
But to have claimed to home sick.
In bed getting rest.
After co-workers they work with,
Heard their boss announcing it!
'Oh no.
I can not believe.
Anyone would call me this late.
Hello!
Who is this?'
'It's me!'
'Me who?'
'Will you stop fooling around.
You won't believe who I saw tonight.
Claiming to be sick.
And home in bed getting rest and sleep.
Guess!'
'Do you know what time it is?'
'Yes.
Yes, I do.
But why would you want to know,
What time it is?
You told me just yesterday,
No one can lose...
What isn't theirs to get to miss.
And I thought this news to lose,
You would miss then blame me for it.'
'Look...
Wasn't it yesterday,
You were telling me...
It was sleep I needed more.
To relief myself,
Of pettiness that causes my stress.
What at this hour of night,
Do you believe I was trying to do?'
'AM I there?
What do you expect me to believe,
If I am here and not there to see it?
Geessshhh.
Some people.
Including you.
Are so ungrateful and thoughtless.
And never satisfied to appreciate,
People like me...
Going out of their way.
Trying to keep a 'FRIEND' informed.
Well, you know what?
This will be the last time,
I will let you take me for granted.
Goodnight.
And go back to whatever it was,
You are trying to do to convince me of it.'
'I don't believe this!'
'YOU?
How do you think I feel?
And I sat in my car for at least three hours.
Watching your friend deceive the both of us!'
'Hang up.
Give me a dial tone.'
'No...
You go first.
I'm the one,
Needing a reason not to call you again.'
'You know how childish you sound?'
'No.
And, I'm not going to listen to you be one.
I ain't got time for your nonsense.
Latah!'
'Wwuh...t!?'
