Qualifying Common Sense Obtained
Lawrence S. Pertillar 1947 (Connecticut)
A testing of minds,
In selected communities.
Known to have a certain demographic.
Where the people are accepted to expect,
To have a high degree of awareness.
And impeccably kept consciousness.
Are tested to identify...
That awareness they have and also untapped,
And under-rated use of common sense.
Much too common to use,
In gate communities reeking of intelligence.
This is where children are groomed,
To be the leaders of tomorrow.
After they graduate,
From prestigious universities.
And top notch Ivy League schools.
Where second and third mortgages,
On homes parents hope for loans.
With the expectation their children graduate,
At least with honors...
Paid by parents given to them.
'You mean 'earned' not given, right?'
'Oh...
You are correct. Earned.'
'And...
Here you are.
All your documents are prepared and ready.
All that is needed now,
Is your signature for the loan.
And on this other one,
We will also need...
Your approval that makes us,
The beneficiary...
Of your life insurance policy.'
'My what?
Life insurance policy?'
'Yes.
Earlier I overheard you say,
Both you and your spouse...
Hope your child graduates,
With certification to have obtained...
Both intelligence AND common sense?
And if not,
Better to have learned...
Both extremely well?
Were those your comments?'
'We were just joking.
Amongst ourselves.
We always do that,
When referring to our brilliant children.'
'Your humor to have is not ours,
To take and laugh away the risk!
Sign all documents.
And I'll return with your copies.'
