What Next Will They Do
Lawrence S. Pertillar 1947 (Connecticut)
What next will they do.
To trick again to fool.
Since their options are gone.
From them to pick and choose.
Oh, what will they do.
To trick again and fool.
Since their...
'Those children across the street.
Holding hands, singing and dancing around.
Are you listening to hear,
What they are singing?'
'That?
They've been doing it everyday.
Since all the elementary schools,
Have begun to open.
I don't pay them any mind.
At least they are learning something to find,
To communicate their thoughts.
Especially between each other.
Isn't it great?
Finally their innocence is being restored.
Without their parents attempting to interfere,
In their learning process.
Don't you agree?'
'That...
I...uh...
Don't know yet.
It depends on what next they will do.'
'Well...
I told them earlier.
After they came home from school,
I would bake cookies for them.
Then read to them nursery rhymes.
You know...
Things like that we did.
When we were their age.'
'Times have changed.
Alot.'
'Look at them.
Playing and singing together.
Thank God.
Times have not changed that much.'
'Pour me a vodka.
Straight up no ice.'
'This early in the day?'
'You bake the cookies.
And I'll do the best I can,
To reminisce my own innocence.
In the way I remember,
Before the internet.'
'I'm sure those kids,
Know nothing about the internet.
Look at them.
They are much too young,
And innocently living life.
In a safe and quiet neighborhood.
To know about such mind altering things.'
'Pour me a double vodka.
And if you happen to have scotch?
Pour me a shot of that too!'
'What about coffee?'
'Before I came to visit?
Yes.
Now?
No.'
'What's on your mind?
Your children getting on your nerves again?'
'Uh...
If you have enough vodka.
Pour as much of it in a pitcher.
And I'll have two shots of scotch!
Do you smoke weed??
'WEED?
Stop joking like that.
Oh...
We ran out of scotch.
All we have is wine.
Unopen.'
'Pass me the bottle.
I always carry with me,
My own convenient corkscrew.
You know...
For emergencies.'
