Do You Own Me?

Doris Johnson 2009 (Houma La.)

When I was a child,
And small nonetheless,
The things you would say,
My body you would caress.
As I looked at you,
And you looked at me,
The fear in my eyes
you could see.

And the words escaped my mouth,
As I pleaded,
and begged
for it to end.

But my words didn't matter,
Because you didn't need consent.

As you became bored of me,
The tears fell.
My mind left dead.
"I'm sorry" were the words you said.

About this poem

This poem is about my experience after my sexual assault experience and what it felt like through the healing process. The trauma still clings onto me but I've learned that it takes time to overcome things like this. This poem is an image of how I felt, and what it feels like when I remember.
