The Empty Chair

It has so many holes in it
That no one ever tries to sit
Upon the cushion once brand new
Above the legs now worn out too.
The chair inside the attic stays
With other things of past lived days.
And though its use has long since gone,
The memories of it live on.
It was that chair where Grandpa cried
When he first heard that Grandma died.
And it was there our first boy sat
All day because we lost his cat.
And I believe it was that chair
My wife stood on with mice somewhere
Until she learned the mice, she "fought"
Were hamsters that our son had bought.
Yes, that old chair has seen the years
Of happiness and those with tears,
So, maybe it will be repaired
To be with those whose lives it shared.
