The Last Rain
Joe Strickland 1986 (Hobbysville, SC)
In the smoldering heat,
A moistened thirst
Clings to the air.
Lips,
Teased by droplets'
Embrace,
Quiver in anticipation,
Aching
With a throbbing desire.
The earth,
A hungry canvas,
Craves the fertile
Strokes of rain,
Each drop
A sensual caress,
Tracing the contours
Of desire,
Leaving trails
Of soaked ecstasy.
Residue of passion,
Drenched,
Bedazzles
The asphalt canvas,
Rivulets
Of lust intertwined,
Whispering secretations
Of ardor
Onto the petrichor
Ground.
As raindrops
Dance their wet waltz,
Desire's crescendo
Reaches its peak,
A tempestuous rainfall,
Falling
In sensual undulations,
Erotic rhythm
Amidst
The steamy mist.
The last rain,
A tantalizing affair,
Wraps a dampened
Web of pleasure
Around bodies
And souls,
Seducing
With its carnal song,
Moaning pleasure
In each downpour.
But,
As luck would have it,
The storm fades,
Reluctantly
Surrendering its hold,
Leaving breathless
Whispers behind,
A lingering taste
Of delicious sin,
On the lips
Of a scorched earth.
About this poem
This poem describes the experience of a hot and dry atmosphere longing for relief in the form of rain. The idea of thirst and desire is used metaphorically to express the anticipation and yearning for rain. The earth is personified as hungry and craving the touch of rain, which is depicted as sensuous and pleasurable. The rain is portrayed as a lover, tracing desire and leaving behind trails of ecstasy. The poem emphasizes the passion and intensity of the rain, comparing it to a tempestuous rainfall with erotic undertones. The final rain is described as a tantalizing affair, providing pleasure to both the bodies and souls it touches. However, the storm eventually dissipates, leaving a sense of longing and the memory of the sinful pleasure it brought. more »
