Sweet Summer Thoughts

The taste of you in my mouth left a sting,
listen close, the rain is starting to sing.
It has been doing that a lot more often,
I should keep these summer days in my back pocket.
And I was sleeping when you slipped away.
If I were given another chance,
I'd wake up early in the day,
Who am I, who am I?
I'm the coward that lingers in your doorway.
Just take me back, take me back
to that time I felt so safe.
I guess now,
other than goodbye,
there's really nothing left to say,
So I guess I'll sit in silence and plan my escape.
So I packed up, went home, and  I fell asleep mid-day.
My ears are locked off from any words, except,
"Are you okay?".
And I wish I had a stronger arm so I could
pull you away.
Because then you wouldn't have to feel the pain.
I can remember when life was so bright,
it scared the dark away.
I remember when I could fight, and I did not
shy away.
But I'm not like that any longer.
Maybe today is something the older me will crave.
Maybe I will reach out and rejoice
on these sweet summer days.
But older is awhile now,
and autumn is coming
