Décembre a noirci l’if et gelé le bassin,
Le buis silencieux est saupoudré de givre,
L’aurore est d’acier clair et le couchant de cuivre,
Le vent, qui rôde, hurle et mord l’Amour au sein.
La Déesse frissonne et le lierre assassin
Étouffe la statue à la gorge. Un Faune ivre
Voit l’outre se durcir, et son pas qui veut suivre
La Nymphe, sent monter la gaine qui l’étreint.
La fête est morte avec sa musique et sa joie !
L’Hiver fait un vieillard de l’Été qu’il coudoie
Et le parc semble mort qui fut jadis vivant.
Mais, immortelle encor par la gamme et l’arpège,
J’écoute, à travers l’ombre et la mort et le vent,
Une flûte à mi-voix qui chante dans la neige.
