WATCHING MOM

WATCHING MOM
9/25/2021

As I watch my momma fade away
Into her daily silence
As she stares  into her Unknown world
I see her being  frightened.

I wonder does mom even know
What's really going on.
Does she know that this disease, she has
Is robbing her from her home?

I don't think she's ever comfortable
Or  feels ANY SORT OF SENSE!
Her thoughts are now so jumbled up
She wonders, “ WHERE THE HELL SHE WENT?”

This  disease has taken her so fast
It's only been a year .
Since doctors diagnosed my mom,
“ALZHEIMER'S “ brought us here.

This, all so evil, of disease,
I ask, GOD , why he struck my mom?
With the worst  disease that's known to man,
IT'S YOU SHE'S ALWAYS HONORED.

YOU TOOK MY SON NOT LONG AGO
AND NOW YOU'RE TAKING MOM
SHES ALWAYS been MY safe and sound
YOU MUST JUST WANT HER HOME???!!!

I pray MOST every night to you
Lord, please don't let her suffer.
AND while you're up there planning things
Please REMEMBER, THAT'S MY MOTHER!!

She s losing all the sense  of her
So confused each time I'm with her
I wish that I could put in place
These jumbled pieces of her puzzle!!

She no longer wants to get out And see
This world she loved so much
She LATELY only stays in bed
I miss her VERY much!!

I WATCH her as she struggles
Just sorting through things each day
The date?? The  time? Most EVERYTHING,
Then she'll ask me,  PLEASE JUST STAY!!

As I LEAVE for work each morning
My eyes are filled with tears
It's hard to watch her slip away
She’s been with me for years.

I feel like she's becoming,
My child  in many ways.
She s requiring so much more from me
AND my time MOST EVERY DAY!

I just wish that I could grab her
Cause she's really fading fast
But I know that it won't help a thing
It's HER MIND that s NOT GONE last

She'd seem to be so good some days
I'll think all this is BETTER
But, yet, here comes ANOTHER day
She'll slip right thru my FINGERS!

There's NOTHING I CAN DO
NO PRESCRIPTION THAT WILL HELP HER
SO I'LL HAVE TO COME TO GRIPS with FACTS
I'M GONNA LOSE  MY MOTHER!!!!

They  say THE GOOD LORD GIVETH
AND HE will TAKE AWAY
TO LOSE SOME ONE SO NEAR AND DEAR
ALL I wants for her to stay!

The longer that she lingers
The more hurt we all will face
Until HIS PLAN IS FINISHED
AND HE TAKES HER TO HIS PLACE!

Dear GOD, I pray your will be done
And it's your will she'll always know me
Cause it will tear  my heart into
When mom says, “NOW. JUST, WHO ARE YOU?”

I'm sure that things will worsen
As this disease progresses on
And shrinks her brain to nothing
My mom will then be gone

She’ll only be a shell of life
Still breathing knowing NOTHING
BUT SHE'LL STILL BE  MY MOTHER THEN
AND FOREVER WILL MEAN SOMETHING!!

So as  I pray both DAY AND NIGHT
FOR MOM TO NEVER SUFFER
I'LL TREASURE ALL MY SPECIAL TIMES
WHEN SHE KNEW
SHE WAS “MY MOTHER”!!!

About this poem

My poem is about Alzheimer’s. I lived with my mother for 5 years after she was finally diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. It captures the stages “I watched” her go through. Heart breaking, but complete reality.
