Phantom Pain

My mission was written in stone
Hoping to mend itself with the rain
That seems unreasonable, now
I predicted the outcome before the start

Dancers before you were too
aggressive or too passive, never just right
 They must have been
 listening to a different melody

I am embarrassed by your attention
as if standing naked in a dream
Forgetting that fear will fly
away in the moonlight

Memories linger when
I let down my defenses
While I refuse to live in the present
Where your brightness shines
And I hide away remembering
flames that burned me before

My shattered  pieces are afraid
they will crumble again
Not knowing that the mended
places are the strongest
And my fear of you is remembered pain
A phantom limb that is no longer needed

About this poem

This was part of poetry class exercise to respond to another of our poems. I don't know if this is how I want the final version to be but I can't figure out what to add and what to take away so here it is.
