The Importance of Words

Words fill my brain, spinning around, sometimes as merrily as children playing games in an old playground, sometimes as harsh as a hurricane near the coastline

Words are a gift, words are a blessing, a soft whisper during a summer day, words are as sharp as a knife fresh off the blacksmith’s table, crafted as carefully as every word that leaves my mouth

Poetry is sweet like the tea my grandmother would place on the dinner table, poetry is as cruel as soldiers on a battlefield, fighting not for their cause but for their children

Poetry is soft like the petals on a rose meant for your lover, poetry is in every movement made

Poetry is me

About this poem

I love writing poetry, it gives me an outlet for my thoughts. While deciding what to write about, I decided to write about poetry itself and how it affects me. Poetry means everything to me, and being able to contribute to the network of stories, poems and words all around the world is truly an honor.

I grew up in a small town in Georgia called Dublin. My father is in the military, which meant that we didn't stay there for very long. Today, I live in Virginia and will be starting college soon to pursue a degree in aerospace engineering. Even though my career will be more in the math area, words will always have the biggest affect on me. more…
