THE FEELING OF EMPIRES

Labuolu 2004 (Lagos)

Ask the Romans, who never knew the fear of death.
In their campaigns; for honor they fought, they said.
Their enemies shook in horror; as they drew their final breathes.
Amidst their conquests, were left seas of red.

Ask the Vikings, true masters of the seas.
For honor too; they sought for driven by greed.
Atrocities; they committed for reasonable fees.
In their graves, still hoarding wealth beyond their needs.

Ask the Nazis, who left behind a dark legacy.
World domination was the goal the strived for.
Reforming war as we knew from the classics.
Altering the world we understood in a single war

All empires have a fatal flaw.
They rise, and they fall.
Ask the Mongols, the Incans and the Assyrians as well.
Dead!, they all are therefore they can't tell.

About this poem

This poem was inspired by my thoughts on how empires rise and their inevitable downfall and how new empires never seem to learn form mistakes
