Forever Haunted

Trapped inside the haunting chamber,
Searing pain slicing through time,
Wiping out the fragile flowers,
Returning to the scene of crime.

Screaming, crying, horrified terror,
Bursting forth like yesterday,
Fetal curl, yet now full grown,
Why won't it ever go away?

Hearts that constantly tremble and break,
Who can heal their unscarred wounds,
No one knows the truth about,
Those who live in haunting tombs.

Shattered dreams and trust that's broken,
Innocence wiped to hollow face,
How can they continue to live,
In this cruel and evil place?

Strength that comes from one above,
Whose love is pure, sincere and true,
Keeps the deadened souls alive,
Hoping with each day anew.

Withered flowers usually die,
So do dreams that lose their way,
But the haunted, living souls,
Can only cry inside and pray.

About this poem

The poem is about the trauma of being abused leaves on its survivors. Though, it is possible to bury it for short periods, it is never completely gone. I find writing poetry helped me through many years of trauma and recovery, along with counselling, and support. It is my hope that others know they are not alone and we do understand the ongoing effects of the trauma.

I grew up in a large family within the confines of a small city. Through my struggles, I learned what I did not want people to suffer (not only abuse, but treatment in general). My life, of 68 years, has been to help others whenever and however it is possible. Financially, that has not been possible. But, my work, and volunteering, has always allowed me to help others. I believe 'Every person, no matter the situation, should know their value is no more, nor any less, than any other person on this earth.'. I strived to help people gain that self-knowledge, as I never had it growing up, or felt confident in it as an adult. My poetry was my one consistent throughout life. But I never felt comfortable sharing it. Poetry, to me, is creativity at its best. more…
