Choices

Last night, awake in another place
I thought I’d feel so free
But only empty silence came
Between myself and me
My thoughts were home with you, alone
My eyes welled up with tears
For all the bittersweet yesterdays
That drifted into years.

Holding on to memories
Spinning and melding together
Like the ever moving sea of life
Endlessly flowing forever
Tonight you’re gone, I’m again alone
Once more with myself and me
Reflecting upon that crucial step
Tempting to set me free.
Like an injured bird with a broken wing
I long again to fly
But the wind is calm beneath me
Thoughts of soaring in solitude die.

Now the door, unlocked and waiting
Invites my walking through
To that other life of broken dreams
Empty without you
But my heart speaks not of the world out there
It whispers, "Be patient, be true."
Freedom is not the gift I choose
The gift I choose is you.

About this poem

This poem was written during a difficult time in my marriage as I agonized over whether to stay or leave. Several years later, my husband Bill passed away suddenly, leaving me faced with even more choices to ponder.
