The Hole for Me

I found a hole for me
To make a dwelling in
Beneath the earth and their trespasses
Beneath their wandering ecstasies
I found a pit beneath the ground
I found a place for me to rot
Where Frank and Vicky lay is not for me
Where strangers come to say their prayers
Among the marble fields and the tombs
‘Petition for my grandma to grant me good things’
‘Petition for the drunk to receive heavenly mercy’
“Would you petition for me?”
I hear my lips quiver to Thee
A grave without a name on the slope
Of the shaded forest of under phosphorescent leaves
By the warbling and chirrups
of larks and bell crickets
of songs and sorrows of my mother
of ramblings and moanings of my father
“Would you petition for me, dear God,
A father who will bury me
So that I am not forsaken
more than I already am?”
I found a hole for me
In the hollow of a felled fir
In the breast of her rotten knots
In the tangle of her spiny arms
I will lay within her tonight
In the hole beneath the world
And pray to my Father who clefts for me
The one who art in heaven so far off

“Please do not leave me.”
