Blessed To Appreciate Aging

Lawrence S. Pertillar 1947 (Connecticut)

Many are blessed with appearances.
To delude an aging,
From a youth done to do.

And some growing to get older,
May look unchanged.
But Mother Nature can not be fooled.

There is only a few among us to live.
Reminiscing a past.
In their minds remaining to exist.

Yet...
No longer to stay,
To do what 'kids' then did.
Many still live to not accept,
Some of us old and blessed to get older.
Refuse to be treated,
As if a child disrespected.

'I called you.
And you didn't answer your phone.'

'Why didn't you leave a message?'

'I knew you were there alone at home.'

'Oh?
I do have doctor appointments.
Bills to pay.
Food to buy and then to eat.
And these days I may take naps.
To rest my mind and body too.
And...
Believe this or not,
I might be taking a bath.
Or something else to do,
Quietly in my bathroom.'

'So...
What to me are you saying?'

'I'm not going,
To allow you to drive me crazy.
That ride I took many years ago.
I no longer permit,
My peace of mind from me to go.'

'You talk as if you are in your 50's.'

'Try 77 and getting close to 78.
I may look in my 40's.
But those years to live them,
Today I can't afford that time to waste.
Since...
I am the one, not you,
To appreciate the age I am blessed to be!'
