The Infinite Skies
Joe Strickland 1986 (Hobbysville, SC)
The higher we soar,
So I've heard it said,
The smaller we appear
To those who cannot fly.
But, how they underestimate
The dreams that take flight
In a wisp of exhale.
I guess they can't fathom
The strength it takes,
To rise above the ground,
The shackles of fear,
To dance with the clouds,
Leaving doubts behind,
While their eyes stay trained
On this terrestrial sphere.
They point,
They scoff,
They don't comprehend,
How a spirit so boundless,
A heart unafraid,
Can see the vastness,
The limitless sky,
When they choose
To remain in their world,
Self-made.
The higher we soar,
The more we can see,
The intricate tapestry
Woven above,
A realm of endless possibilities,
A realm they can't access
With mere human warmth.
They watch us with disdain,
Those who cannot fly,
Unable to grasp
The audacity of dream,
But we know the magic,
The freedom we hold,
Our spirits unfettered,
We are part
Of the sky's glimmer.
I say let them shrink us,
Diminish our worth,
Because we are the dreamers,
The bold,
The wise,
We'll spread our wings,
Reach for unseen heights,
And dazzle them all
With our infinite skies.
